| A one minute phone call | December 15th, 2006 |

Allah has created us, and to Him we shall return.
Allah has created us, and to Him we shall return. I came back to Abu Dhabi after a long 2 months of tiring hassle and struggle with my Senior Design Project.
I reached Abu Dhabi at around 3:30 pm, so I prayed AlAsr prayer in the Masjd and then went to my parent’s room to sit with them.
As I was getting myself comfortable on the sofa, the house telephone rang.
“Assalamu Alaikum”
“…wa…Alaikum…assalam”
It was my aunt from Alain.
“Ahlaaain khalooh, how are you? how is my grandmother? …wait… why do you sound so tired?”
“Didn’t you…know?”
“Know what khalooh?”
“Three of your cousins had…a car accident and…died…, we are in the emergency room right now…”
“WHAT!!!?……………………….mum my aunt wants to talk to you…”
“Assalamu Alaikum”
After five seconds all I could hear was:
“…لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله…لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله…لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله”
(A prayer which is said to declare submission to Allah’s Will)
I realized two things from that 1 minute phone call.
- Death knows no age. I could be building a house, buying a car, getting a job, graduating from university,… but can I be insured that I’ll live long enough to benefit from it? You can never be sure. My cousins -الله يرحمهم- were not 50s or 60s, they were my age or maybe a year or two older than me. However, nobody said we had to pass the age of 60 to be viable to death.
- My Iman is very low. I said “WHAT!!?” instead of saying what my mother said, “لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله”. Will I be able to say “لا إله إلا الله“ when my time comes? Or will it be the last thing in my mind?
I end with what I started. “Allah has created us, and to Him we shall return.”
إن العين لتدمع، وإن القلب ليخشع وإنا لفراقكم يا أبن وبنات خالتي لمحزونون، ولا نقول إلا ما يرضي الرب
إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
