Job Hunting January 23rd, 2007

It’s been a while hasn’t it? ;)

Here’s a small update to what’s been going on with me:

- I graduated -الحمد لله-

- Am job hunting

Truth be said, I didn’t expect job hunting to be so complicated, but nobody said it was going to be easy. Here are some words of advice to those who’ll be venturing for a job soon enough –إن شاء الله-.

Before I went job hunting, I asked for advice from my friends and family. Where do you think I should apply? Typically the answer was “just apply everywhere and take the best offer.” Unfortunately, that wasn’t the wisest answer.

Whatever happened to checking whether or not the place you’ll apply to is ethical, moral and, most importantly, abiding to Islamic laws? Or have we become so greedy and ill-minded to sell our values and beliefs to the highest bidder?

Why do you want a job? We don’t want the trivial answer of “I want to be a productive individual in society”, we all know that, but why do you want a job with THIS organization specifically?

Not many people realize this, but choosing the organization they’ll be working at is just as important, I’d argue that it is MORE important, than how much they’ll be paid.

Let’s analyze.

Are you fine with applying for a job in Emarat FM for instance?

Emarat FM is a music radio station. That’s the description of the organization you want to apply to. If we pass this description through the criteria I mentioned earlier (Ethical, Moral and Abiding to Islamic Laws), some might argue about the first two criteria, but can you argue, as a true Muslim, that Emarat FM is abiding to Islamic law? If Emarat FM came on judgment day, would it be placed in the right hand of the scale or the left? In other words would listening to Emarat FM be written as a good deed in your book? If not then it most surely will be a sin, because that scale only has two hands and the deeds are either good or bad.

If Emarat FM, as an entity, is defying Islamic laws, doesn’t that makes you an accomplice when you work there? Aren’t you one of Emarat FM’s functioning limbs and you are helping out in that defiance? Think about it.

“Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of (the meed) that the hands of men have earned. That (Allah) may give them a taste of some of their deeds: in order that they may turn back (from Evil)” (30:41)

My advice to you is to list down a meaningful and well-thought set of criteria to have a clear sight of where you don’t want to go at least. Keeping in mind that not all organizations nowadays are serving the better good of our society and a person must be critical and selective to where and why they want to work, because it is that decision which determines where our precious society will be headed.

My criteria was:

1- Not an organization that functions by breaking Islamic laws (e.g. Emarat FM)
2- Not an organization that deals with money (e.g. no banks, Islamic or non-Islamic)
3- It must be an organization that benefits my country
4- Pays well

There is no harm in wanting a higher pay. The harm is to set this to be your one and only criterion.

Maybe if no one applies to the unethical organizations they will eventually wear out and decay. Therefore, we’ll be left with the good organizations that are serving the good of society and uplifting us as a productive community.

Final note: I do not expect everyone to agree with me, but I do expect them to respect my point of view.

Sallam 3alaikoum w rahmat ALlah wa barakatuh..

alot of people, from whom i know, prefer to work in banks during the summer holiday.. as a summer job..
and it’s not a good sign at all.. because as you mentioned one of the criteria’s in finding a job or just a summer job is to check whether it abides with the islamic rules..

    Jazak ALlah khair brother..

Well i totally agree with what you said, what you said is 110% true, i mean if you come to think about it instead of getting red of one headache which was studying working hard so on and so forth you’ll be living in a nightmare of not making 110% halal money which shouldn’t be questioned

Another point is unfortunately people are going for easy money now, more experiences to add to their CV as you mentioned one example which is working for Banks >>> Not 7alal at some banks yet a lot of people go for it

Anywyas tabarak Allah you said it well and i cannot add no further rabi yewafigik an you get employed very soon :)

    well first mabrook 3al ta5aruj
2nd, what u said is very wise but there is a point, if u r willing to work in an organization in which u want to change something. lets say advertising agency, u will be dealing with many ppl of different religions but the only goal u want is to achieve an islamic ad or change the way ads are viewed (believe me they suck big time) so will u apply for this job, yes or no? why?

You raised a good point sister.
The thing is though, usually in ad companies, if am not mistaken, clients would come to the company and ask for an ad that has 1,2,3… as requirements. Sadly, more often than not, they require a girl to be in the ad, because they believe that most men are lowlife perverts that won’t mind having a 100 meter long ad of a female giant, wearing Allah knows what, shoved in their faces whether they liked it or not.
If I was working in an ad company I might not always have the privilege of choosing what kind of ads to make. There will come a time where I might be forced to create an ad am not proud of.
A solution, in my opinion, is to open my own company where I would set the rules and one of my rules would be, “The Company respects females and shall not use them as seductive objects, even if you asked nicely.
Back to your point. What if I apply to an organization in order to change how things are done? It really depends on what that organization does and on what you’ll be doing. For instance, you wouldn’t be able to change a non-Islamic bank to an Islamic bank by being a simple Teller or normal employee. It might still be hard when you’re a high-level manager. Its not till you convince the bank’s owner to repent, come back to Allah and settle for a couple of millions of Halal money over a couple of ten-millions of non-Halal money.
I believe it really depends on the organization and your position in affecting the decisions made in that organization.

Nice topic man! Congrats on the graduation, I too graduated just a few weeks ago. I’m supposed to pick up my “ifada” on Sunday in sha’ Allaah.

Concerning the topic at hand, people keep telling me I can’t run away from the mixed environment. I really worry about that, it was easy to avoid the opposite gender in college, since it’s a men’s college. But how will I do it at work?

I’d love your tips on HOW to get the right environment?

I like what you wrote and encourage myself and others to work on the same guidelines but i do have one question just for the sake of interest

I totally understand why you wont work for a bank because it conflicts with your first category/criteria. But then you include islamic banks, that i would like to ask you, is it because you personally dont want to or due to a religous reason.

You See brother my amibitions is to work for an islamic bank, an islamic bank or an islamic financial institution. The reason behind that is i find it the best way to serve my religion and my duty towards Allah by using my educational knowledge to benefit an institution which can help spread the word if Islam even if it only helped spread the name.

I thank you for this topic and wish you all the best with finding a job that does not clash with your principles morals and values.

    Your Bro

You see i want a job not only to make me a productive person of the society but a job that will help my serve my religion in the first place which can be a form of “3ebada”

We can all work for a job that obides to the islamic law but not all jobs can contribute to serving Islam. You can work for a deli but that job may not be the best to serve your religion directly.

The question is where is that jobs that obides by the islamic way and in the same time promotes the islamic way of life and on the other hand one that provides a decent standard of living?

    wa 3alikom elsalam
